Sports Card Profit Calculator

A card is not profitable just because it sells for more than you paid. Use the full cost of the deal to decide what to offer and whether the return is worth the risk.

The basic sports card profit formula

Profit = resale price − selling fees − shipping costs − purchase price

Start with realistic sold prices for the exact card, parallel, year, player, and condition. Active listing prices are asking prices—not proof of what buyers actually pay. Then subtract marketplace or payment fees and the amount you expect to spend packing and shipping the card.

Example calculation

Purchase price: $100
Expected resale: $150
Selling fee: 13.25% ($19.88)
Shipping and packing: $7
Estimated profit: $23.12

The sale is $50 above the purchase price, but the actual estimated profit is only $23.12 after entered costs.

How to calculate sports card ROI

ROI = profit ÷ purchase price × 100

In the example above, $23.12 divided by the $100 purchase price produces an estimated ROI of 23.1%. ROI makes it easier to compare deals of different sizes. A $20 profit on a $40 purchase is a very different return from a $20 profit on a $400 purchase.

Set a maximum offer before negotiating

Work backward from the resale value and the return you want. Your maximum offer should leave room for selling fees, shipping, uncertainty, and your target profit. This prevents excitement over a card from turning a promising flip into a low-margin deal.

Inputs that improve the estimate

  • Use recent sold comparisons for the exact card.
  • Adjust for visible condition differences.
  • Use the fees charged by the marketplace where you expect to sell.
  • Include insurance, supplies, and shipping when relevant.
  • Use a conservative resale value when sales are inconsistent.
